rsync webmaster’s friend

September 12, 2012

I was using FileZilla before, but I found rsync and I don’t think I will ever go back.

When I am syncing from my development server to the host, I make a file and call it with the “dot” command

. file

To upload changes to the server,

rsync -e ssh --progress -uabv . name@site.com:htdocs

It works beautifully. I can also sync hard drive to removable drive.

rsync -uabv . /mnt/usb

  1. Here is a way to invoke rsync when you need 755/644 default permissions, no matter what the source says (but it won’t overwrite destination’s current permissions) “rsync –exclude-from=exclude -e ssh –progress –chmod=u=rwX,go=rX -ubrltv . user@host”
